VALÉ MAX SNELL

Early in December Max Snell passed away after a battle with cancer. Max was a member of the District Personnel Committee and had served in that role for about 15 years. He was awarded the Silver Arrowhead in 2009. He will be missed from this Scouting involvement.

VALÉ SYD THOMAS

Last week Syd (Lofty) Thomas passed away aged 84. Lofty started his Scouting as a youth member at 1st Geelong Try Boys (now 1st Eastern Park Try Boys) where he gained the King’s Scout badge. He started as a leader in 1946 at 1st Geelong as Assistant Scout Leader for about 2 years and then a break in service. He returned in 1966 as Cub Scout Leader at 1st Leopold, then Senior Scout Leader (now called Venturer Leader), Rover Adviser and then Group Leader. In 1972 he was appointed Assistant District Commissioner (Water Activities) in Bellarine District – one of the Districts that became Geelong Peninsula District – and then Assistant Region Commissioner (Water Activities) which he held for 20 years before becoming an Honorary Commissioner in 1995. He served as a leader for almost 50 years and was awarded the Silver Kangaroo – the highest leader award. He was a leader who ensured youth members were important and introduced water activities to many.

DISTRICT CALENDAR

I have attached the calendar again for your use.

GROUP PROMOTIONS

Many Groups are taking part in various community and school festivals over the next couple of months. The District now has a gazebo and tear-drop banner available for borrowing. The banner is a Scout one but the gazebo is just plain. We also have an indoor only pull-up banner.

HIGHLAND GATHERING STALL

The District has been involved with the Highland Gathering for many years going back to the previous Districts and the Geelong Area. We sell pancakes, tea and coffee, soft drinks and sandwiches. Those involved in the set up and the selling earning hours for their Group for the split up of the profits. If you would like to help on 17/18 March please let me know by the end of February.

JANUARY READING

I have been reading Scouting for Boys again; not the versions that I had previously read but an original 1908 version that I have been given. I am glad I had read a later version before this as there are some strange approaches by Baden-Powell to the topics he was introducing to boys at that time. In the early years Scouting for Boys was updated and reissued almost every year. Observation and tracking games were important topics originally and are still activities that we use today although they may be slightly different from the original – we don’t learn the tracks of horses or men walking, limping or running anymore, although I did when I was a Scout in the ‘60s. But the good old Kim’s Game is still used. Baden-Powell considered these useful as being able to help others by becoming mentally alert. Perhaps you might include some of these in your coming activities. Please remember to send me and your District leader a copy of your term program.

TO PONDER

“Never trust to general impressions, my boy, but concentrate yourself upon details.”
Arthur Conan Doyle, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

Baden-Powell quoted a lot of Sherlock Holmes in Scouting for Boys.
